Representing the engineering-intensive mission plan, for the third orbital flight of Mercury astronaut Wally Schirra named his capsule Sigma 7. Mercury's systems were thoroughly tested in space during six orbits on Oct. 3, 1962. The spacecraft splashed down in the Pacific Ocean, a first for NASA. NOTE: This patch was designed long after the mission flew and was never approved by the astronauts. It is presented only as a souvenir of the mission.
