Scott and Irwin landed Falcon near the Apennine Mountains and drove the first lunar rover 17 miles over the surface. Later, Worden floated outside the command module Endeavor to make the first deep space spacewalk.

During the misson an oxygen tank inside the service module exploded, prompting all of Odyssey's systems to be shut down. This forced the crew to use the lunar module Aquarius as a lifeboat in order to safely return to Earth.

Original Mercury astronaut Alan Shepard, the first American in space, commanded Apollo 14 with Stuart Roosa and Ed Mitchell on Jan. 31 - Feb. 9, 1971. Shepard and Mitchell flew Antares to a landing in the Fra Mauro area, where Shepard swung at a couple of golf balls. Roosa remained aboard Kitty Hawk.
